JIRA Activity Report

Report on JIRA Seminar in Beijing and Special Lecture by
JIRA Chairman at CHINA-HOSPEQ 2010 Forum

1. JIRA hosts The 1st Beijing Medical Imaging Development Forum

JIRA activities in China are led by the International Division's China Working Group made up of JIRA member companies working in China. Members gather information about China's medical device regulations and submit industry opinions regarding rulings made by China's State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) and the Certification and Accreditation Administration of the People's Republic of China(CNCA). In terms of interchange with organizations in the same industry, the section interacts with the China Association for Medical Devices Industry (CAMDI), the Beijing China office of NEMA-MITA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association - Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance) and the Beijing office of COCIR (The European Coordination Committee of the Radiological, Electromedical and Healthcare IT Industry).

Ever since 1997, when JIRA's International Division began activities in China, it has been a long-standing dream to host a medical equipment seminar in China. This dream finally came to fruition on August 18, 2010 when The 1st Beijing Medical Imaging Development Forum was held at Beijing's Landmark Hotel. The event came about as the result of cooperation between China's SFDA and CAMDI and the great efforts of the China Working Group of JIRA's International Division. The Seminar was run under the leadership of Mr. Hiroshi Ishikawa, Head of the International Division and opened with greetings from JIRA's Chairman Mr. Hisatoyo Kato and words of welcome from both Mr. Chang Yongheng, Deputy Director-General, China Center for Pharmaceutical Internal Exchange, SFDA and Dr. Jiang Feng, Vice Chairman, CAMDI. After further greetings from Mr. Kazuo Maeyama, Chairman of JIRA's China Working Group, seminar participants heard two presentations, one by Dr. Jiang entitled "Present State and Future Prospects for China's Medical Device Industry" and "Product Standards and Trials in Medical Device Registration" by Mr. Jiahua Huang, Director, Shanghai Quality Supervision & Inspection Center for Medical Devices of SFDA.

In terms of seminar participants, not only were there attendees from the Japanese Embassy and Japanese companies operating in China, there were quite a few industry attendees participating directly from Japan, as well as attendees representing European companies. In total there were over 60 participants from 28 companies and/or industry associations, a number which far exceeded expectations. Another contributing factor to the success of the event was the fact that participants valued highly the presence of the invited speakers from the Chinese government. The question and answer time after the lectures was very lively with attendees enthusiastically participating in the discussion time. One reason participants rated the forum highly was certainly because Mr. Chang took the initiative to answer questions directly, thus allowing participants to hear the authentic opinions of the Chinese government.

JIRA's International Division will take advantage of the success of this event to plan the next event in China and so aim to be not only of help to Japanese companies desiring to enter the Chinese market, but to also serve as a bridge, along with the Chinese government, to Chinese companies.

2. Special Lecture by JIRA Chairman at CHINA-HOSPEQ 2010

"CHINA-HOSPEQ 2010" refers to the 19th China International Exhibition and Technical Exchange of Hospital Equipment Forum sponsored by China's Ministry of Health (MOH) International Health Exchange and Cooperation Center. Cooperation between JIRA and MOH began in 2002 and JIRA has visited China every year since to deepen connections. JIRA's first exhibit at CHINA-HOSPEQ was in 2006 at which time relations with Chinese companies began. While attending the ITEM (International Technical Exhibition of Medical Imaging) held in Yokohama in April of this year, Dr. Li Hongshan, Director General, International Health Exchange and Cooperation Center, MOH asked JIRA to introduce and cooperate with CHINA-HOSPEQ since the 1st Beijing Medical Imaging Development Forum was slated to be held at the same time. JIRA accepted this invitation and JIRA's Chairman was able to give a special lecture at CHINA-HOSPEQ 2010. This was the first special lecture to be given by the Japan medical device industries associations and the result of years of cooperation with MOH and a landmark event for JIRA.

On August 20, 2010 JIRA Chairman Kato gave the second lecture of the day entitled "The Present and Future of Medical Imaging IT and JIRA Initiatives." The presentation used materials in both Japanese and Chinese and had three parts: 1) Regarding IT, 2) The forefront of medical imaging IT in Japan, and 3) JIRA Initiatives (in Japan). About 100 young doctors were in attendance.

Before the Forum began, MOH Director General Li Hongshan expressed thanks to JIRA for its willingness to present and for supporting CHINA-HOSPEQ. After the lecture, both Professor Dai Jianping, Vice President, Chinese Medical Association and Chair of the Forum, and Professor Qlyong Guo, Chairman, China Society of Radiology highly commended the talk.
