Review of the fiscal year (April to March) of 2009

The percentage in ( ) refers to the increase or decline over the previous year.

1. The total count of medical imaging systems was as follows.
- Production 395.0 billion yen (- 7 %)
- Export 179.5 billion yen (- 18 %)
- Import 118.0 billion yen (+ 10 %)
Total domestic market 333.6 billion yen (+ 6 %)
2. The domestic market of major equipment was as follows:
The following increased.
-- X-ray 95.8 billion yen (+ 10 %)
-- CT 60.0 billion yen (+ 5 %)
-- Magnetic resonance
imaging system (MRI)
48.0 billion yen (+ 14 %)
-- Diagnostic ultrasound 39.8 billion yen (+ 1 %)
On the other hand, the following decreased:
-- Nuclear medicine 11.0 billion yen (- 6 %)
-- Related items & accessories 7.6 billion yen (- 20 %)
-- Image processing systems 46.4 billion yen (- 7 %)
Total diagnostic equipment increased to 308.6 billion yen (+ 4 %)
Therapeutic equipment significantly increased to 24.9 billion yen (+ 53 %), due to the growth in the second half.
For diagnostic X-ray, the following increased.
-- Cardio & angio 23.8 billion yen (+ 26 %)
-- General-purpose R/F 21.0 billion yen (+ 4 %)
-- General-purpose radiography 10.2 billion yen (+ 6 %)
-- Mammography 4.8 billion yen (+ 46 %)
-- Dental 4.3 billion yen (+ 16 %)
-- Mobile 2.2 billion yen (+ 13 %)

3. The total production output decreased to 395.0 billion yen (- 7 %).
For major equipment, the following increased:
-- Nuclear medicine 4.3 billion yen (+ 1 %)
On the other hand, the following decreased.
-- X-ray 121.5 billion yen (- 4 %)
-- CT 91.6 billion yen (- 5 %)
-- Diagnostic ultrasound 71.5 billion yen (- 15 %)
-- MRI 34.6 billion yen (- 9 %)
-- Related items & accessories 18.7 billion yen (- 29 %)
-- Image processing systems 43.1 billion yen (- 7 %)
Total diagnostic equipment decreased to 385.3 billion yen (- 8 %)
On the other hand, therapeutic equipment significantly increased to 9.7 billion yen (+ 89 %).
For X-ray system, the following increased:
-- Mammography 4.0 billion yen (+ 248 %)
-- Cardio & angio 16.6 billion yen (+ 6 %)
-- Mobile 6.4 billion yen (+ 10 %)
-- Dental 6.0 billion yen (+ 3 %)
Especially, the growth in Mammography was significant.
4. The total exports decreased to 179.5 billion yen (- 18 %).
For major equipment, the following increased significantly:
-- Nuclear medicine 1.1 billion yen (+ 2 462 %)
On the other hand, the following decreased:
-- CT 51.9 billion yen (- 12 %)
-- X-ray 47.9 billion yen (- 20 %)
-- Diagnostic ultrasound 45.3 billion yen (- 21 %)
-- MRI 19.4 billion yen (- 26 %)
Total diagnostic equipment decreased to 179.5 billion yen (- 17%).
Therapeutic equipment significantly decreased to 0.1 billion yen (- 94 %).
For X-ray system, the following increased:
-- Mammography 1.9 billion yen (+ 1 217 %)
-- Mobile 4.3 billion yen (+ 8 %)

On the other hand, the following decreased:

-- General-purpose radiography 11.0 billion yen (- 8 %)
-- Cardio & angio 6.9 billion yen (- 25 %)
-- General-purpose R/F 6.0 billion yen (- 21 %)
-- Dental 1.7 billion yen (- 20 %)

5. The total imports increased to 118.1 billion yen (+ 10 %).
For major equipment, the following increased:
-- MRI 32.7 billion yen (+ 22 %)
-- X-ray 22.2 billion yen (+ 6 %)
-- CT 20.3 billion yen (+ 6 %)
-- Diagnostic ultrasound 13.6 billion yen (+ 10 %)
-- Nuclear medicine 7.9 billion yen (+ 4 %)
On the other hand, the following decreased:
-- Image processing systems 5.5 billion yen (- 21 %)
Total diagnostic equipment increased to 102.7 billion yen (+ 9 %).
In addition, therapeutic equipment increased to 15.4 billion yen (+ 19 %).
For X-ray system, the following increased:
For diagnostic X-ray, the following increased.
-- Cardio & angio 14.1 billion yen (+ 13 %)
-- Mammography 2.7 billion yen (+ 16 %)
-- Mobile 0.1 billion yen (+ 19 %)
In contrast, the following decreased.
-- General-purpose radiography 0.6 billion yen (- 22 %)
-- General-purpose R/F 0.3 billion yen (- 48 %)

6.Summary

In the domestic market from April through March in 2009, the recovery trend was shown from the bear market of the second half of 2008. There are some reasons for the recovery trend. Especially, the recovery in the second half of 2009 seems to have been mainly caused by supplementary budget. The increase of demand of cancer-related devices, devices for health check (diagnostic equipment, Mammography and FPD) and the rebound in demand of the large diagnostic equipemnt including the increase of MRI to 48.0 billion Yen (+ 14 %) revitalized the market. The total was an increase to 333.6 billion Yen (+ 6 %).
